St. Paul’s Cathedral

Today I’ll be taking you to one of the holiest places in London, St. Paul’s Cathedral. The Bishop of London is housed in St Paul's Church, an Anglican cathedral in London. The mother church of the London Diocese is the cathedral. It is a Grade I listed building that is located atop Ludgate Hill, the highest point in the City of London. The earliest church that was built here in AD 604 was dedicated to the apostle Paul. Sir Christopher Wren created the current building, which is a late 17th-century example of English Baroque architecture. Its construction, which was finished during Wren's lifetime, was a crucial aspect of the city's extensive reconstruction effort following the Great Fire of London.
One of London's most well-known and recognisable landmarks is the cathedral. For more than 300 years, its dome has dominated the skyline, framed by the spires of Wren's City churches. From 1710 to 1963, it held the record for the tallest structure in London at 365 feet (111 metres). The dome is still one of the tallest on the entire planet. After Liverpool Cathedral, St. Paul's is the second-largest church structure in terms of square footage in the United Kingdom.
On July 30, 1669, Sir Christopher Wren received an official commission to create a replacement building. Prior to the Great Fire, he had been given the task of rebuilding churches to replace those that had been destroyed. Wren is credited with designing more than 50 churches throughout the city. Wren worked on his five Tracts on Architecture at the same time he was planning St. Paul's.
Five years before the fire in 1666, in 1661, Wren started offering advice on the restoration of the Old St. Paul's.
Five years prior to the fire in 1666, and 1661, Ren started offering advice on the restoration of the Old St. Paul's. The proposed restoration comprised interior and external upgrades to go along with the Inigo Jones-designed classical facade. [24] Wren intended to use the existing building as a scaffold to erect a dome in place of the crumbling tower. He drew a picture of the intended dome to illustrate his concept that it should cross the aisles and nave. [25] After the Fire, it was first believed that a sizable portion of the old cathedral may be saved, but in the end, the entire building was destroyed in the early 1670s.
The new cathedral was dedicated for use on December 2, 1697, 31 years and 3 months after the Great Fire destroyed Old St. Paul's. The lecture was delivered by the Bishop of London, the Right Reverend Henry Compton. The phrase "I was happy when they said unto me: Let us go into the temple of the Lord" is found in Psalm 122. The following Sunday saw the start of the first regular service.
Some people had high opinions of Wren's cathedral: "Without, within, below, and above, the eye is filled with unfettered delight," While some people detested it, others said that it had a "Pompeian feel" because of its enormous arches and golden capitals.
