Adjacent to a very small station, the port city of Dover sits on a cliff of world-famous white cliffs at the entrance to England. Standing on the cliffs is the largest fortress in the country, while the soft chalk is dug through military tunnels back to the Napoleonic Wars. Like most port cities Dover may be a little tricky, but it has loads to keep you interested. There are National Trust sites such as the South Foreland Lighthouse where Marconi conducts land-changing experiments, or the Dover Museum, which has a Bronze Age vessel in immeasurable preservation.

The first view of England across the Channel, Dover's White Cliffs climbed to a height of 110 metres and continued eight miles on either side of the city. The cliffs are carved in the UK and are traditionally referred to from Shakespeare's King Lear to the old shacks of the sea. The fort began to take over its present design from the 12th century under the reign of Henry II and was prepared for an armed conflict by Henry VIII. In the Napoleonic Wars, a network of tunnels, consisting of rifle butts and casemates, was dug into the rock. Later, it became a military commander in World War II, and Admiral Bertram Ramsay withdrew from Dunkirk.
